Update (02/28/07): please find the official announcement regarding this appointment at the formal newsletter of Leiden University (in Dutch) online.
Well, I've received formal word from Leiden University (The Netherlands): as per March 1st, I will be appointed to full professor as a so-called "personal chair" for the program in Journalism and New Media. Obviously I am extremely excited by this - so let me share some of the particulars about the position and the program.
As things go, a (in this case: part-time) personal chair is generally awarded to further the research in a particular field that the candidate is considered a specialist in, and does not come with specific teaching or administrative responsibilities, although I will offer guest lectures, give occasional talks, and teach a "master class" in new media theory and practice every Summer together with a practitioner from the field of multimedia. For example in June 2007 I will co-teach this 2-week class with former New York Times online reporter and currently associate professor at CUNY Sandeep Junnarkar (also operating the stunning multimedia reporting site Lives In Focus).
The appointment is housed at the Journalism and New Media program, within the Faculty of Letters of Leiden University. Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands. It was founded in February 1575, and it was the first university in the Netherlands where freedom of belief and religion was practised, as reflected by the university’s motto, Praesidium Libertatis, Bastion of Liberty.
The JNM program has few, but outstanding faculty - all experts who teach and do research next to other careers both in the professional world and in academia. Colleagues include coordinator Jaap de Jong (a widely published rhetorician who also advises politicians how to write and deliver their speeches), Peter Burger (acknowledged expert in media hypes and urban legends), Willem Koetsenruijter (multidisciplinary news researcher), newswriting expert and author Addie de Moor, and new media specialist Rob Punselie (of ContentKings). I am also really excited to work and co-teach with another recently appointed professor in Leiden, colleague Paul Rutten, with whom I share a fascination for the creative industries. Awesome. Cannot wait for the party.
