Beyond Journalism Speaking Dates 2015

Per Fall 2014, Tamara Witschge (University of Groningen) and I are engaging in a large-scale project investigating entrepreneurialism in journalism and society. Our project - culminating in a book titled Beyond Journalism which we hope to publish with Polity Press in 2016 or 2017 - in the first wave involves a series of pilot studies (based on the case study research method) of journalism startups around the world. The legwork for this project is partly done by the talented students of our masters program in Journalistiek en Media (Dutch language) at the University of Amsterdam.

Coinciding this project, Tamara and I (sometimes together, sometimes alone) will speak and participate at various conferences and discussions on entrepreneurial journalism. Below are the dates and details of these engagements - updates will follow throughout the year. Please drop by and talk with us about projects of mutual interest and concern!

January 15: Conference on "Leren van scripties" at Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands.
January 22: Panel debate on Entrepreneurial Journalism at Windesheim College, Zwolle, The Netherlands.

Touring Media Life and Work (2007-2014)

Over the last couple of years, especially since the publications of Media Work (2007) and Media Life (2012), I have had the luxury of being able to go on a lot of trips to talk about my research with students, colleagues, and media professionals around the world.

Some examples of tour dates and places over these years: in 2007 I went back and forth between Europe and the US for media work talks and even had a tour shirt made (because deep down inside I am a failed bass player).... A year later, in 2008, I got a chance to add Australia and New Zealand to the list. After a couple of years of doing a bit less traveling (and spending more time visiting colleagues in the US and Canada), in 2012 and 2013 the schedule intensified with media life presentations all over the place. This year, 2014, has been an amazing year, with more intensive visits - doing seminars and workshops rather than one-off talks for example - in places as a far and wide as Finland, Australia and Brazil, plus some fantastic visits to Mallorca and Croatia.

I've mapped these tourdates using Matador for fun:
Mark Deuze’s Travel Map
Mark Deuze has been to: Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Mozambique, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Overall, I recognize that my ecological footprint is oversized, and I try to take responsibility for this to be very selective with long-distance travel commitments. I have to admit that I consider these travels and visits an enormous privilege and one of the aspects of an academic career that I deeply appreciate. So at the end of this calendar year, I am looking forward to new opportunities in the near future, as I plan to visit the US, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Germany in 2015. Hope to see you all soon...
